My Professional Experience

April 1997 – Present

My private law practice is limited to the defense of those accused of criminal offenses in Santa Cruz County. My main office is located at 2820 Porter Street in Soquel. (close to the Hwy 1 freeway).

December 1996 – April 1997

I ran a private law practice in San Francisco, CA as a sole practitioner handling criminal defense cases exclusively.

January 1996 – December 1996

I operated an internet marketing business on Thetis Island, BC.

January 1995 – December 1995

I was Vice President and General Counsel at Ground-Loc Systems, Inc. in California and Washington, I assisted in the development of marketing strategies, programs, and materials. I also negotiated and prepared agreements and analyzed production costs and product pricing.

January 1990 – December 1994

I was in private law practice in Joshua Tree, CA where I handled all aspects of running a sole practitioner law office handling only criminal defense cases in the high desert communities of San Bernardino County.

January 1983 – December 1989

I was a partner in the law firm of Martin & Van Elgort, LLC., in Yucca Valley, California where I focused primarily on criminal defense.

July 1979 – December 1982

I was the Supervising Municipal Court Judge for the Morongo Basin Division of the San Bernardino Municipal Court District in Joshua Tree, CA. In addition to presiding over civil and criminal caseloads I developed and implemented many innovative programs to improve the delivery of court services to the community.

January 1977 – June 1979

I was the Judge of the Justice Court of the Twentynine Palms Judicial District in San Bernardino County. I presided over both criminal and civil court cases and ran a private law practice on the side. I also filed two lawsuits requiring the state and county to upgrade the court to a municipal court bringing more services to residents of the area.

October 1973 – December 1976

As an Assistant Public Defender for the County of Riverside, based in Indio, CA., I oversaw the branch offices in the desert portions of the county. In addition to defending cases, I supervised a staff of eight attorneys, two investigators, and two secretaries.

January 1972 – October 1973

I was a Deputy Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California based in Los Angeles. In this role, I represented clients who were accused of various federal criminal offenses. I was one of the original staff attorneys in this newly formed federal program.

June 1966 – January 1972

I was the Executive Director of the Legal Aid Foundation of Long Beach, where I developed and managed a federally funded legal service program. This was a program that involved 4 offices and 18 attorneys. During this time, I also served as a Legal Services Consultant for the Federal Office of Economic Opportunity.

July 1965 – June 1966

As the President and General Manager of a private escrow corporation in Los Angeles, I managed the operations of this small company that consisted of three escrow officers.

October 1963 – July 1965

I was a Deputy City Attorney in the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office based in Long Beach, CA., where I conducted numerous jury trials as a prosecutor.

July 1962 – October 1963

I worked in a private law practice in Beverly Hills, CA.
